TedX is an open forum for ideas and each year they outline a theme the content within the conference will loosely adhere to. 2019 was an opportunity to take on the theme of ‘Legacy’. With such a broad topic we struggled for a hot minute on narrowing the field of ideas to just one.
Eventually, after a lot of discussion and a lot of back and forth down different worthy avenues. We ended up interviewing a friend of Chello about his personal struggle writing his father’s obituary and the legacy he would leave behind.
How can an entire life be distilled to just one page?
We took the hour long interview and condensed it down to a heart wrenching 3 minute narrative. Characters were developed and a number of considered transitions were planned out. We explored a number of handmade animated textures throughout the animation. I illustrated with the super talented William Nghiem in a hand drawn organic aesthetic using Photoshop then rigged the characters and objects within After Effects.
We used the opportunity of making this short film for the TEDx audience to tell the poignant story that an obituary never could.
